Came to France in early stages of the war and was severely wounded at Neuve Chapelle. After recovering from his wounds he was transferred to the Royal Scots, and served with them in the Balkans and in Egypt. Returned to France in June, 1916, and was again twice wounded. He was promoted Regimental Sergt. -Major at 21 years of age
