The official memorandum of the award is as follows :— "When his batterv was suddenly subjected to a heavy concentration of hostile shell fire, and a direct hit was made on one gun pit, causing a fire in the ammunition store, he rushed in with two gunners to the scene of the fire and extinguished the flames. While doing this he was badly wounded."
